Profile | Curriculum Vitae

Dr. Syed Hasnain is a naturalized U.S. citizen, born February 10, 1941 in Sahiwal, Pakistan. He received his medical degree from Nishtar Medical College in Multan, Pakistan in 1963. He then moved to the United Kingdom in 1967 where he completed his ophthalmology training and received diploma in ophthalmology from Royal College of Surgeons, England. Dr. Hasnain immigrated to the United States in 1974 and completed his one-year fellowship in ophthalmology at the University of Connecticut in 1975 and became Board Certified in Ophthalmology in 1977.

He chose to settle in Porterville, California where he found the weather very similar to the Punjab region in Pakistan where he was raised. Porterville is located in the southern end of the Central Valley at the foothills of beautiful-range of the Sierra Mountains.

Although Dr. Hasnain's practice is limited to general ophthalmology, he has a special interest in glaucoma because of his personal affliction with the disease. Dr. Hasnain always wondered why some patients developed glaucoma at normal intraocular pressures (normal range 10 to 21 mmHg) while others, who were diagnosed as having ocular hypertension, did not have glaucoma at higher levels. In view of the above reasons, Dr. Hasnain has observed that glaucoma appears to be a multifactorial disease in which high intraocular pressure is only one of the factors. Normal tension glaucoma appears to be a systemic disease. On the basis of arcuate field defects in the early stages of glaucoma, Dr. Hasnain hypothesizes that the optic disc may not be cupping but sinking (herniating) in the scleral opening in its entirety.

On this website, under glaucoma research are his two published articles "Scleral edge, not optic disc or retina, is the primary site of injury in chronic glaucoma" and "Chronic ischemia is a major factor in glaucoma pathogenesis". The remaining articles and slide presentation elucidate his arguments in support of the 'sinking optic disc' hypothesis.
